Policemen Detained Trade Union Lawyer for Dissemination of Information about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On 10 December 2008 Alexander Korolyov, a legal inspector of the Belarusian Radio and Electronics Workers’ Union (REWU) has been detained by policemen for distribution of an information leaflet, dedicated to 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Galina Lisitsina, head of the REWU Mogilev territorial division informed about it. Together with other activists of independent trade union she took part in an action aimed at disseminating information about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted 60 years ago, among citizens of Mogilev.
As Galina Lisitsina noted, activists divided into two groups and went into different directions. Alexander Korolyov, a trade union activist, was approached by a police squad and was requested to go to the police station. Protests on illegal nature of detention did not bring any results.
Trade union activist has been kept for a number of hours and then was released. It turned out that policemen wanted to find out personality of Alexander Korolyov.
Trade union activist filed a complaint against actions of policemen.
Remarkably, on the eve of anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus requested a sociological center “Zerkalo-Info” to conduct a survey in order to find out the level of awareness of the Belarusian citizens about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and implementation of its provisions in the country. As “Tomorrow of Your Country” information and analytical web site informs, the questionnaire survey that has been conducted from 28 October until 10 November 2008 involving about three thousand people, representing all strata of urban and rural population of Belarus aged 12 years up. The survey found out that one third of the respondents (33%) believed that during 2008 their human rights have been violated.
According to the survey’s results, 64% of respondents consider that it is necessary to start familiarizing with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in school, whereas other 9% - in pre-school institutions.
